Facebook announced on Wednesday that it would begin testing ads that appear in the company’s Oculus virtual reality headsets.
In May, the company announced it would advertise on the Oculus mobile app, but Wednesday’s announcement marks the first time the social media company will advertise on its VR headsets.
The Oculus headset advertisement will first appear in the Blaston shooter game from Resolution Games. In the coming weeks, ads will also appear in two other Oculus apps, Facebook said.
Oculus headset ads could be a significant move for Facebook, which generates more than 97% of its total revenue from advertising. Currently, these ads are mainly shown to users on the company’s Facebook and Instagram social networks.
Facebook also said these ads could provide new ways for software developers to generate revenue.
The ads follow Facebook’s advertising principles and give users the same control options as on Facebook. This includes the ability to hide certain ads or hide them from certain advertisers. Users can also choose “Why am I seeing this ad?” choose. to access more information about the ads displayed.
Facebook added that the advertising is not based on data stored locally on users ‘headsets, such as images from their devices’ sensors or images of their hands from the hand-tracking feature.
