Every Oscar red carpet look that made us look twice
The fashion on the Oscars 2023 red carpet was nothing short of impressive, as we expected given the list of nominees, presenters and cast members. The March 12 ceremony, held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, marked Hollywood’s last presentation of the style of the awards show — that is, aside from the Vanity Fair party that followed immediately. When Rihanna performed “Lift Me Up” from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack (for which she received her first Oscar nomination), we enjoyed unforgettable ensembles on and off stage. The 35-year-old musician made headlines when he traded in a cut-out Alaïa number for a Maison Margiela by John Galliano getup dripping with diamond belly chains.
Other contestants who were longtime veterans of the Style Spotlight included Cate Blanchett in Louis Vuitton, Janelle Monáe in Vera Wang, Halle Berry in Tamara Ralph Couture and Kate Hudson in Rodarte. However, we’ve also seen looks from Ariana DeBose, Sofia Carson, Ana de Armas, and Stephanie Hsu, all of whom step out to define their unique aesthetic and are often quite experimental with trends. Ashley Graham in tailored Alberta Ferretti, Vanessa Hudgens in vintage Chanel, and Lilly Singh in a magenta Christian Siriano coat hosted ABC’s Countdown to the Oscars preshow, while Laverne Cox captured the outfit and shared it with E! in her custom-made Vera Wang haute gown. Of course, we’ve collected all the designer details of the best dressed of the night in one place for your scrolling pleasure.
It is important to note that the 95th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, drew criticism as many black actors and directors were snubbed and only Angela Bassett and Brian Tyree Henry received nominations for their roles in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” or “Causeway”. Female directors were also completely excluded from the best director category. However, there was a wide range of designer representatives from the mainstream when it came to fashion.
