Today Forever 21 launched its first Black History Month collection, a collaboration with three black artists – Stormy Nesbit, Ashley Sky Walker and Henry Jones. The limited capsule collection offers a mix of lively hoodies, matching sets and t-shirts that capture the reach, power and beauty of Black’s artistic expression.
You will find a visual series of pieces that communicate meaningful messages and celebrate influential black characters like Malcom X and Miles Davis. While the struggle to end systemic racism continues, this collection has had a particularly emotional response. The eye-catching artwork that is visible on each item was designed by the creatives who were completely immersed in the entire process. Nesbit emailed us, “Forever 21 has allowed me to create from my heart and showcase my most authentic self without reservation. So my excitement is an understatement.”
A strong advocate of representation, Nesbit takes inspiration from the people who surround them and portrays people with color in all their living glory. Every single piece she worked on was created after someone she knows and loves personally. “My art generally focuses on expressing beauty in melanin. When I was asked to create pieces for Black History Month, it didn’t take me a lot of persuasion,” she shared.
“The presentation of artists or works of art talking to a little girl who has never seen her silhouette on a t-shirt or a boy who sees a child who looks like him on a sweater is incredibly impressive.”
“I would love to see brands promote and work with more black creatives,” she continued. “The presentation of artists or artwork talking to a little girl who has never seen her silhouette on a t-shirt or a boy who sees a child who looks like him on a sweater is incredibly impressive. Slide You black stories, black creatives, black businesses. Sharing an instruction or changing a profile picture feels blank if there is no other action. “
