2021 will be a pivotal year for black fashion designers who are finally getting more recognition and support than they’ve earned in a long time. Thanks to Brother Vellies designer Aurora James, many retailers are joining the 15 percent promise that big companies must buy 15 percent of products from black designers. She’s already put big retailers like Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, and Sephora behind the important initiative, and we’ll only see more as the year progresses.
This year started strong with the inauguration of the President. Christopher John Rodgers dressed Kamala Harris for being sworn in as Vice President, and Sergio Hudson dressed Michelle Obama for the historic event. Kamala was wearing a Sergio Hudson tuxedo coat later that evening and getting dressed too! Jason Rembert from Aliétte can also be seen. He created the metallic cut out dress Zendaya wore in the Netflix movie Malcolm & Marie. (The dress can actually be pre-ordered at Zerina Akers’ Black Owned Everything shopping destination!) Upfront, we’re putting together a list of eight black designers who are sure to shine in 2021. Read on to find out more about them beforehand.
