Burglars be careful! Amazon’s new doorbell for £ 49 retains guard 24 hours a day

Video doorbells are nothing new, but Amazon is trying to shake up this popular market by releasing a much cheaper option. The online retailer just announced its new Blink video doorbell that can be screwed to the front of your home for just £ 49.99 – that’s ridiculously cheap. As an example of its value for money, Google’s Nest brand recently launched its new battery operated doorbell, priced at over £ 170.

Just like its competitors, the Blink can monitor the front of your house and send instant alerts to your smartphone if it detects something or someone. It offers 1080p HD video recording for crisp playback and there is even infrared night vision when the sun goes down.

If a delivery driver or neighbor rings the doorbell and you are not home, you can chat with the person in front of your door using an app on your iPhone or Android device anywhere in the world using a built-in speaker.

To make installation easier, the Blink doorbell is also powered by two AA lithium batteries, with Amazon promising up to two years of use before they need to be replaced.

Finally, the company makes it easy to save the footage captured by the camera, allowing users to save things directly to an optional Blink subscription or to save things locally with no recurring fees using a Blink sync module and USB flash drive.

It will be launched shortly (full details here) in two colors and thanks to a water-repellent design, it should also withstand the British weather.

“The new Blink video doorbell provides affordable, easy-to-use and reliable security at your front door and is the perfect first step for customers looking to build a smart home security system,” said Mike Harris, chief operating officer, Blink. “The Blink Video Doorbell is designed for every home – it’s packed with helpful smart security features like custom motion detection zones to monitor the areas that matter most to you and your family. With the addition of a video doorbell to Blink’s smart surveillance cameras – including the new Blink Floodlight camera – you can see who’s at your door, keep an eye out for packages and protect your entire home, no matter where you are. “

The Blink Doorbell isn’t the device that Amazon announced. The company is also launching a new smart thermostat that can control the heating simply by speaking to Alexa. It also features something called hunches that can guess when you were out or about to go to bed with the heater on and then turn the heater down to save money.

Along with this new thermostat, Amazon also launched a new Echo called the Show 15.

This device mounts on your wall and has a 15.6-inch 1080p full HD display that makes it easy for you to view the weekly diary, check the weather, or even watch TV.

It is powered by Amazon’s new AZ2 Neural Edge processor and also includes a redesigned home screen with more customization options, new personalization features with visual ID, and brand new Alexa experiences.

Eventually, the company hopes to bring robots into homes with the launch of its Alexa-powered Astro. This little screen on wheels follows you around the house, helps you with video calls, and even acts as a digital watchdog, streaming footage of what’s going on in your home straight to a smartphone. Sounds exciting? You will need a large bank balance, which will cost Astro around £ 1,000 when it arrives later this year.
