It’s launch season for smartphone makers and Xiaomi is the latest to announce a new blockbuster product.
The Chinese company unveiled the latest in its MIX line of premium concept phones at a glamorous launch yesterday. The Mi MIX 4 is the first phone in the series in almost three years after the Mi MIX 3 was launched in 2019. And we can’t wait to get our hands on it.
The most impressive new feature is a hidden selfie camera that Xiaomi has been working on for years. The company calls it a “Camera Under Panel” or CUP design, and it means it doesn’t require any notches or holes to break up your phone’s screen. Instead, the camera is “practically invisible to the eye” because it is located below the screen.
To do this it took a lot of advanced technology to ensure that image quality remained high even under a 400 ppi screen. Xiaomi has developed a new material as well as special circuitry and algorithms to ensure that the camera can continue to pick up light, color and details.
With screen specs like this, you’ll be happy not to miss a single pixel of space. The MIX 4 has a 6.67-inch AMOLED 3D curved display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and 480 Hz touch sampling for improved touchscreen response.
The MIX 4 also attracts attention with its advanced chip technology. It’s the first smartphone to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ chip, which enables more complex tasks to be completed faster.
Much like the new Google Pixel 6 with its powerful tensor chip, the MIX 4 will be able to translate text and photos, and create audio translations and subtitles in real time. That certainly makes vacation abroad child’s play when we can finally go away again.

Its other specs are equally impressive. The MIX 4 comes with a 4,500 mAh battery, 120 W wired fast charging and 50 W wireless charging. In boost mode, the battery can be fully charged in less than 15 minutes.
There are three rear cameras with a total of 129 MP, including an ultra-wide angle and a periscope lens that can handle night scenes, low light, and ultra-clear images. It is also equipped with a 1014 top speaker and a 1216P linear floor speaker for high definition audio playback. Storage ranges from 128 GB with 8 GB of RAM to 512 GB with 12 GB of RAM.
Xiaomi has used classic colors for this launch: The MIX 4 will be available in gray, white and black.
The price? It’s comparable to the latest Pixel and iPhone models, ranging from 4,999 yuan (£ 556) to 6,299 yuan (£ 701), depending on the storage chosen.
The new flagship phone is part of the company’s grand plans for world domination. Before the launch, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said the company wanted to become the world’s largest smartphone provider within three years. It’s definitely not a pipe dream: from March to June of this year, Xiaomi was the best-selling smartphone brand in Europe with 12.7 million units sold. And with this week’s release, it could become the Android maker to beat.
The company also announced a number of new products at yesterday’s launch, including the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 tablet, Mi OLED TV, and a new Mi Smart Speaker.
