Microsoft may have a breakthrough feature in the works for its Surface Laptop lineup. A new patent discovered by WindowsUnited (and reported by Windows Latest) could show that future Surface laptop devices will offer an incredible range of customization options. The patent includes interchangeable back panels so that surface fans can easily change the look of their device.
The patent does not specifically refer to a surface device, only to “computing devices”.
However, should the feature ever hit the market, it could be implemented on Surface Laptops, Surface Books, and other Surface devices.
The patent describes a back panel which a user could “easily replace”.

There are already ways to customize laptops like skins and wooden panels.
However, these solutions do not fit interchangeable parts. Some covers are difficult to remove and stickers also take time to remove.
There is also a possibility that a device could be damaged if certain aftermarket customizable parts are removed.
Whether this feature will ever get into stores and consumers remains to be seen.
However, Microsoft has looked at this type of customization before.
With the Xbox 360 console, Microsoft offered faceplates with which you can easily change the appearance of your gaming system – if you are looking at it from the front.
There was a wide variety of faceplates, such as a synthetic wood design or different color schemes, as well as faceplates designed for specific games like Halo.
