Ana de Armas continues to honor Marilyn Monroe. Following her portrayal of the late icon in Blonde, the actress attended the 2023 Oscars on March 12 wearing a dress reminiscent of an iconic Marilyn Monroe-style moment. Louis Vuitton’s nude gown was encrusted with delicate pearls that reminded de Armas of “little raindrops and flowers,” she said in an E! Interview on the red carpet.

Aside from its mermaid silhouette, de Armas’ dress had a similar bodice and fabric to the dress Monroe wore to a 1962 Democratic National Committee fundraiser, where she famously sang the “Happy Birthday” to John F. Kennedy. The nude illusion dress caused quite a stir at the time and later became one of the most expensive dresses in the world when it was auctioned for nearly $5 million in 2016. The dress found itself in the news again Kim Kardashian wore it to the 2022 Met Gala after being loaned out by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum.

Monroe’s dress was designed by Jean Louis and contained 2,500 crystals. de Armas’ dress, meanwhile, required similar craftsmanship that reportedly took 1,000 hours to produce. Styled by Samantha McMillen, de Armas kept the rest of her look simple with diamond hoop earrings, bangles and a matching ring stack. The night before the Oscars, de Armas wore a nude dress similar to what he’d seen at a Netflix party celebrating the nominees.
