Understand the stages and terms of menopause

Although the word “menopause” is often used as shorthand for the entire process, the transition to menopause actually occurs in stages – and menopause is just one of them.

Perimenopause is the period before menopause when a woman experiences symptoms (such as hot flashes and irregular periods) that are related to hormonal changes.

menopause Technically, it only lasts a single day – the day that marks 12 consecutive months without a period.

Postmenopause It starts the day after 12 months without a period (menopause) and lasts for the rest of your life.

Early menopause is when menopause (12 months without a period) occurs before the age of 45.

Premature menopause is when menopause occurs before the age of 40.

Medically induced menopause is menopause caused by medical treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation or surgery.

note: Although not a technical term, some people use the word “ Premenopause “refers to the time between the start of your period and reaching menopause.
