True or false: sleep

March is National Sleep Awareness Month.

I was staring at my bedroom ceiling at 3 a.m. when a very rational thought occurred to me: The movies I grew up with lighten my sleep.

Listen to me: In Sleeping Beauty, Princess Aurora falls into a deep sleep – but it’s a curse. She shouldn’t even wake up! Then there’s “Sleepless in Seattle,” which basically means you can’t fall asleep if you want to fall in love. When you fall asleep? Nightmare on Elm Street.

It all makes sense why my brain and body boycott ZZZs. Of course, it could also have something to do with fluctuating hormones, age, health conditions, and everyday stressors that don’t involve a boogeyman.

The truth is that one in four women in the US have trouble falling and/or staying asleep. And not getting enough sleep can lead to a variety of mental and physical health problems.

Take our quiz to get the facts and learn what women need to know about sleep.

1. Adults need at least six hours of sleep per night for optimal physical and mental health.

2. There are two types of sleep.

3. Women need more sleep than men.

4. Women are less likely to have sleep problems than men.

5. Lack of sleep can harm your heart.

6. You can “catch up” on sleep on the weekend.

7. Sleep apnea (when breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep) is rare in women.

8. Sleeping too much can increase your risk of dementia.
