RSV is the abbreviation for Respiratory Syncytial Virus. It is a common virus that causes lung and respiratory infections.
RSV typically begins to spread in the fall and peaks in the winter months.
Slide 3:
Most people experience moderate flu-like symptoms and recover within 1 to 2 weeks.

However, some people, especially babies and older adults, may experience more serious infections, and RSV could be fatal.
Complications that can cause difficulty breathing include:
- Respiratory tract infections
- Bronchiolitis

- Hypoxia (low oxygen levels)
- Dehydration
- Heart attacks and cardiovascular accidents

You can control RSV symptoms:
- Taking over-the-counter fever reducers
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Relax
If you have high blood pressure or are taking prescription medications, be sure to talk to your doctor before taking over-the-counter medications.

RSV can worsen underlying lung diseases such as COPD and asthma. People suffering from these conditions may need anti-seizure treatments if they become infected with RSV.

Talk to your doctor or go to an emergency room if:
- You have difficulty breathing
- You can’t eat or drink
- You have chest pain

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself from serious respiratory illnesses.

RSV vaccines are recommended for:
- You drink
- Adults aged 75 and over
- Adults between the ages of 50 and 74 who are at increased risk of serious RSV infections
