Do you suffer from lactose intolerance? Put dairy products back on your menu and enjoy their health-promoting properties with the help of Milkaid
An estimated four million people in the UK are off their diets of milk, ice cream and other dairy products due to lactose intolerance.
This is unfortunate because milk and products such as cheese and yogurt are full of nutrients that have a positive effect on our health. In particular, they are great sources of protein and calcium. They also provide many other vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, B vitamins, vitamin D, phosphorus and potassium.
Together, these nutrients help keep our muscles, bones, teeth, skin, vision and nervous system healthy. They are especially helpful as we age to ward off age-related diseases like osteoporosis. This is particularly concerning for postmenopausal women, when hormonal changes lead to reduced bone density. Calcium is particularly important for maintaining strong bones. And vitamin D is useful because it helps us absorb calcium from our food.
What is lactose intolerance?
It’s worth noting that lactose intolerance is not the same as a milk or milk allergy. It is a digestive problem caused by the body’s inability to break down lactose.
Lactose is a sugar found in dairy products. To break it down we need an enzyme called lactase. Most of us can produce all the lactase we need in the small intestine. For those who cannot, lactose intolerance becomes a problem.
The result can be unpleasant symptoms such as bloating, stomach cramps, flatulence and diarrhea. You can avoid these effects by eliminating dairy from your diet, but this can be very restrictive – especially if you like to eat out. This also means that summer treats like ice cream are strictly forbidden.
You can enjoy dairy products again
The good news? With Milkaid it’s easy to replenish the amount of lactase in your system. Each raspberry flavored tablet contains a dose of 3000 ALU lactase. This means that chewing just one or two tablets immediately before eating foods containing lactose should be enough to help break down lactose.
Because Milkaid is so easy to take, it’s ideal when eating out. And because many children develop lactose intolerance before the age of 10, there is also Milkaid Junior – strawberry-flavored tablets that are suitable for children aged 3 and over.
Alternatively, you can try Milkaid Drops – add three drops to 500ml of milk and store in the fridge for 24 hours. It breaks down lactose by up to 70%, so you can enjoy milk in your cup of tea or on your cereal without having to worry about unpleasant consequences. Or add 10 drops to achieve up to 99% lactose reduction.
Milkaid contains no artificial flavors, gluten or yeast.
