“The Crown” is back on Netflix and the parallels to fashion keep cropping up.
Rumor has it that student Kate Middleton caught the eye of young Prince William as she walked the catwalk at St. Andrews University in Scotland. As the story goes, Middleton caught the monarch’s attention during the school’s annual “Don’t Walk” charity fashion show, where she wore a dress so iconic that it sold at auction in 2011 for over $125,000.
Middleton, apparently one of the early adopters of the sheer trend, wore a completely sheer knitted black and gold silk dress with a turquoise band at the top and a woven band across the hem – very Y2K style. Underneath, she wore a black bandeau bralette and black panties. (Even royalty experimented with fashion in college!)
Of course, The Crown puts its own spin on the fashion show that changed history. From what we can tell so far, it seems like The Crown costume designer Amy Roberts has stayed true to the original source material but given it a sleeker update. It looks like they even stuck to Kate Middleton’s bouncy curls and various hair accessories.
