The latest adaptation of Mary Shelley’s timeless novel Frankenstein has captivated audiences, with director Guillermo del Toro’s film being praised for remaining mostly faithful to the source material. With Australian Jacob Elordi as The Creature and Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, it’s somehow Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza who steals the show – adorned in Tiffany & Co. jewels and 19th century dresses. Her extensive wardrobe for Frankenstein was designed by Emmy-nominated costume designer Kate Hawley, who has worked on projects such as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Crimson Peak. The Gothic character Elizabeth is interested in entomology and botany, which is why Hawley incorporated references to beetles and other insects in patterns and garment shapes. In addition to tight wasp waist corsets, certain fabrics were also selected that imitate the extremely thin beetle wings.
