Singer Meghan Trainor tells the deeply personal story behind the birth of her third child, her daughter Mikey Moon.
In an exclusive interview, the Grammy winner explains why she and her husband Daryl Sabara turned to surrogacy after past traumatic pregnancies and delivered a message of openness and gratitude for this path to parenthood.
The medical decision behind surrogacy
For Trainor and Sabara, parents of sons Riley, 4, and Barry, 2, after careful consultation, surrogacy emerged as a necessary medical decision.
It wasn’t our first choice, but we had endless conversations with our doctors on this trip and this felt like the safest way to continue growing our family.
Trainor tells PEOPLE. The couple welcomed their daughter on January 18 via a surrogate, whom Trainor describes as one of the most selfless, strong and loving people I have ever met.
Contrasting experiences: From trauma to trust
Trainor’s journey to find her daughter is in stark contrast to her previous works. She opened up about suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after the birth of her first son, Riley, which left her enduring a 45-minute surgical procedure alone while he was treated in the NICU.
After the birth of her second son, she experienced a major breaking point and wrote that she felt unsafe holding her crying baby while her own body felt like it was failing.
This time the experience was based on constant communication and care.

“She kindly responded to our many check-in texts to make sure she was OK,” Trainor says of her surrogate. We felt so connected throughout the entire trip.
Advocacy for openness in family education
Now that her family is complete, Trainor is using her platform to normalize surrogacy. “I want people to know that surrogacy is just another beautiful way to start a family.
“It’s not something you can whisper about or judge,” she explains. “Every family’s journey is different and all are extremely valid.”
The singer, who will release her new album Toy With Me on April 24, finds deep meaning in motherhood despite its challenges.
