It is no surprise to fans of Salsa and Latin jazz. The band hails from Columbia, where Salsa is a sacred tradition.

Fast Fact: Cali, Colombia is said to be the “Salsa Capital of the World” and is host to an annual Salsa Festival and Competition held in October. There are countless more dance and music events throughout the country that showcase Columbia’s vibrant and diverse culture.

The History of Guaracha Music and Its Influence on Salsa
The band’s name, Las Guaracheras, is representative of their music and is rooted in history.

Guaracha (gwah-rahcha) is a music genre that originated in dance halls and music clubs. The genre is unique in that it is performed with a variety of instruments and features syncopated rhythms, a fast tempo, and often satirical lyrics. Rumba and Salsa were directly influenced by early forms of Guaracha. The Guaracha music of Columbia evolved over time integrating electronic music, tribal music and pop.

Cuba’s Guaracha, said to be the first, was elevated in the 20th Century with a Big Band sound and the powerhouse talent of Celia Cruze, “the Queen of Salsa” and “Singer of Guarachas”.

We may not know the full origin story, but we can’t help but join in the Guaracha celebration. The music calls us to dance. Baile, Baile, Baile !
