If the stress levels of change, the overload of the information, the abundance of temptations of consumption and extremes in society rise, we have to use how we process the emotions in order to be preceded by this stress and to reject the stress -related health problems.
This is the role of EBT: a new ability to bridge the gap between the self -regulatory skills, which until around 1980, when the stress levels rose, together with psychological and physical health problems and the skills we need today.
Now do not go anywhere, but emotions
What is the connection between emotional processing and physiology? First, the processing of emotions is our standard strategy, since research has shown that cognitive control (thinking, analyzing and mindfulness) does not switch off the stress response at today’s level.
Although cognitive control is effective at low stress levels with moderate stress, it does not switch off the cortisol cascade in moderate stress, which contributes to the development of most psychological and physical health problems.
A study from 2013 showed that in moderate stress the most powerful cognitive technology, re -evaluation, which did not lower cortisol levels, the gold standard for measuring self -regulation techniques. The success of behavioral strategies depends on a highly functional precisely cortex, and without stress protection against cognitive control, it is unlikely that behavioral interventions will be successful.
Emotions reflect physiology
Antonio Damasio is a Portuguese neuroscientist whose work deals with the relationship between emotions and their brain substrates. As a professor of psychology, philosophy and neurology at the University of Southern California and also as an extraordinary professor at the SALK Institute, he developed the nesting principle of neurophysiology.
Emotions and feelings reflect physiological conditions.
The most important aspect of this model is that the brain is hierarchical and emotions reflect basic, primitive elements of physiology. This is important for health, since the sympathetic nervous system is dominant when activating the stress reaction and is associated with negative emotions and dysregulation.
The strategy in EBT is to process negative emotions to access positive feelings that are associated with the dominance of the parasympathetic nervous system and improved biochemistry.
The better feeling means getting better
Reducing the frequency of our natural tendency to think out of stress, to sharpen our awareness of our emotions as a sign of our physiological state and to change it, if it is negative, are the basic premises of the EBT.
It is also very appealing how your doctor should imagine, who says to you: “I want you to change your biochemistry so that your health problem (e.g. obesity, anxiety, depression) gets better. Your job is to notice whether you are happy or not, and if you are not happy, you process your emotions.
However, this prescription is of fundamental importance for health care and helps the patient to take good care of their biochemistry in a natural way. While our nation is trying to get well again, this natural approach, which is neuroscientific, is included in more medical practices. What gets us better is to feel better.
