In the golden age of black Hollywood, which spanned the late 1990s to early 2000s, we could switch to channels like UPN and BET to see ourselves on a variety of black television shows. Despite Hollywood’s half-hearted push for diversity (and the subsequent backlash to that push), it would be years before we would see such widespread mainstream representation again. The 2016 season premiere of the HBO original series “Insecure” marked an important new beginning for the industry. The show, which starred Issa Rae as the chaotic lead, portrayed millennial Blackness without gimmicks or pretentiousness. Over the course of its five seasons, “Insecure” quickly became a cornerstone of black culture, and the controversial series finale left many of us asking, “What’s next?”
