Exclusive: Dazed China Relaunches Under New Publishers

Dazed China will be relaunching in June under Dazed Media and the Chinese publisher Meta Media Group.

The quarterly magazine will highlight emerging talent in fashion, art, film, music and digital culture to reflect Gen Z’s rising influence in China. Former Vogue China fashion director Audrey Hu will serve as editor in chief.

“China’s Gen Z is one of the most creatively fluent generations in the world. They’re visually literate, digitally native and culturally confident. Dazed China speaks directly to that energy,” said Thomas Shao, founder and chairman of Meta Media Group, in a statement.

Dazed China previously launched in 2019 through a licensing agreement with Yoho Group, and later shuttered in 2021 due to financial difficulties at the company that were exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Dazed Media said it was not operationally responsible for Yoho Group’s financial management, and did not strategically withdraw from the Chinese market.

Dazed Media and Meta Media Group — which publishes Bloomberg Businessweek Chinese Edition — first partnered in 2017, when they formed a joint venture, called Modern Dazed, to acquire a majority stake from LVMH in Nowness, a video channel founded by Dazed Media CEO Jefferson Hack. The deal gave Meta Media Group the rights to operate and produce local content for Nowness China.

Dazed China joins Dazed Media’s other international titles, including Another Man China, Another Magazine China, Dazed Korea and Dazed MENA.
