The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater celebrated its 65th anniversary with an opening gala that featured Hollywood's elite, including actress Cynthia Erivo, who stars opposite Ariana Grande in “Wicked.” For the event, which took place at the famous New York City Center, Erivo chose a simple look from Valentino's Resort 2024 collection: a black turtleneck crop top paired with a high-waisted maxi skirt that embodied calm luxury. The sparkling embellishments and flowing train added interest, as did the double-strand pearl necklace she wore wrapped around her neck. The singer accessorized with multiple pearl earrings and hoop earrings and showcased a bejeweled manicure.
Other notable stars included honorary chair and “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin, actress Bianca Lawson and model Damaris Lewis. Hostin wowed in a ruffled tulle dress, while Lawson looked vacation-ready in a green velvet suit with a lace-trimmed bodice. Lewis paired a fringe miniskirt with a patchwork zip-up jacket and completed the look with a braided bun and pointed pumps.
The evening included a performance of Ailey's transcendent African-American cultural masterpiece “Revelations” with a live choir and orchestra, as well as a dance tribute to legendary artistic director Emerita Judith Jamison, choreographed by Hope Boykin. In celebration of Jamison's 80th birthday, the tribute was scheduled to include live renditions of “Feeling Good” and “Both Sides Now,” each performed by Erivo. The event marks the beginning of the dance company's annual holiday engagement at New York City Center, which runs November 29 through December 31, 2023. The five-week program includes “Revelations” and the world premiere of the dances “Me, “I and You” and “Century”.
