Chadian Model Crowned Africa’s Next Super Model at a sombre yet captivating event

The fashion world celebrated the birth of a new African star on Saturday, November 22, despite the evening carrying the weight of profound loss, following the passing of Air Vice-Marshall Terry Okorodudu, beloved husband of Joan Okorodudu, founder of Isis Models and the visionary behind Africa’s Next Super Model. Air Vice-Marshall Terry Okorodudu was a vehement supporter and helped build the competition which has been running for over a decade.

But amidst the poignant undercurrent of loss and remembrance, 22-year-old Chadian model Dillah Acelle claimed the coveted title. Her victory at such a sombre time, a testament to the enduring legacy of those who create platforms for Africa’s brightest talents to shine – and Joan Okorodudu and her late husband are a testament to that.

The moment her name echoed through the event venue, Nairobi’s Broadwalk Mall, Acelle was both joyous and in disbelief. Tears glistened in her eyes as the reality sank in that she had just been crowned Africa’s Next Super Model 2025.

The stunning Chadian model grace and determination captivated the audience and judges at the competition, in equal measure. But for her the win embodied every dream she’d dared to chase.

“I’m so excited to have won this competition,” Acelle said, her voice trembling with emotion as she clutched the $5,000 cheque presented by Mr. Chris Oputa from Studio 24, (pictured above left with Matteo Puglisi, CEO of Select Models Management) both steadfast supporters of the competition.

“This is not just a win for me, but for every young girl who aspires to break into the fashion world. I hope my journey inspires them and shows that anything is possible with hard work, confidence, and perseverance. This win is for every dreamer, every girl who dares to aim high,” she says.

Unparalleled Confidence

For Acelle, the path to this moment had been anything but easy. Competing against 15 other exceptional models from across the African continent, she had to prove herself in every challenge, every walk, every moment under the judges’ scrutinising gaze. But something about her was different – an intangible quality that set her apart from the very beginning.

“Her confidence was unparalleled,” recalled Matteo Puglisi, CEO of Select Models Management and one of the evening’s esteemed judges. “She showed professionalism in every challenge and grew significantly throughout the competition. It was clear she was destined for greatness.”

That greatness now translates into exclusive global exposure and the opportunity to work with luxury international fashion brands and help launch Acelle’s career onto the world stage.

The grand finale itself was a spectacle befitting Acelle’s triumph and by extension her peers.

Joan, (pictured above with her late husband at the 2024 ANSM show) unable to attend due to her heartbreaking loss, was deeply present in spirit. Her moving tribute to her late husband played on the screen, and the crowd responded with visible emotion.

Renowned media personality Nailantei Kenga (above) stepped in to host the event in Joan’s absence, joined by BBC senior reporter Ata Ahli as co-host. Their warmth and professionalism kept the evening flowing seamlessly, ensuring the event received the spotlight it deserved.

The judges’ panel had been particularly impressed by Acelle’s evolution throughout the competition. Her unique charm, grace, and runway prowess weren’t just natural gifts—they were honed through dedication and an unwavering belief in herself. Each challenge revealed new layers of her talent, each walk down the runway a testament to her growing confidence.

Support from far and near

For the second year in a row, Cornell McBride (pictured above) President of hair and beauty brand Design Essentials, attended the event, further cementing his commitment to empowering African talent through his partnership with Isis Models.

The event also drew notable figures from Kenya’s creative sector, all there to witness the crowning of Africa’s newest modeling sensation. Collins Okoth from the Kenya Film Commission lauded the competition’s impact on the creative economy, while Mumias East MP Peter Salasya added his support to the celebration.

“We believe in fostering an environment where creatives in Kenya and across Africa can turn their talents into careers, their passions into livelihoods, and their dreams into global successes,” Okoth said, words that seemed to perfectly encapsulate Acelle’s own journey.

Meanwhile, Daima Mkenya Africa, founded by Zahra Balewah Moi, showcased their patriotic fabric featuring the Kenyan flag, adding a cultural dimension to the evening’s celebration.

The Future is Bright

But this night belonged to Dillah Acelle. As she stood on that stage, her face gleaming with pride, she can look to bright future as she is welcomed into the Isis Modelling family, which has some of the most successful African models working on the international scene.

Acelle also embodies hope for aspiring models across Africa – including those from the Sahel region of the continent – proof that talent, determination, and confidence can open doors. Her journey has just begun.
