5 Outfits to Wear with Maxi Skirts: Flowy and Fabulous

34

If there’s one thing I will always have in my closet, it’s a good maxi skirt. I love dresses, but lately I’ve become a big skirts girl too! Separates are great because you can mix and match them: you get more mileage than you do from a dress. Maxi skirts are such a wardrobe staple and surprisingly versatile. Dress them up for special occasions or keep things casual and comfy for a day at home. I love that with just a few accessories, your maxi skirt can either be the star of the show… or play a supporting role to a really great top or statement shoe.

So if you’ve got one hiding in the back of your closet (or sitting in your online shopping cart), consider this your sign to give it a spin. Today, I’m breaking down exactly how I like to style maxi skirts, with a few favorite outfit ideas you can pull together ASAP. Let’s get into it!

5 Outfits to Wear with Maxi Skirts: Flowy and Fabulous

With fashion trends constantly changing (seriously, blink and it’s a whole new aesthetic), it can be tricky to know what’s actually worth investing in. That’s exactly why I’ll always leave room for a maxi skirt. It’s timeless, endlessly versatile, and somehow always feels current no matter what’s trending at the moment.

The weather in Charleston can feel like a wild card. It’s breezy one second, and takes a sweaty turn the next. That said, whether you’re dressing for chilly weather or sweltering heat, a maxi skirt can be styled in any season. But, because maxi skirts are SO versatile, the options can feel a little overwhelming. If you’re wondering where to start (or just want some fresh outfit ideas), you’re in the right place. By the end of this post, you’ll have the inspo you need to make your maxi skirts a go-to outfitagain and again.

What is a Maxi Skirt?

Let’s start with the basics! A maxi skirt is exactly what it sounds like—a long skirt that typically hits right at the ankles (sometimes even grazing the floor). It’s known for its easy, elegant silhouette and comes in all sorts of fabrics like cotton, chiffon, silk, denim, linen, and even knits. That kind of versatility makes it one of the most useful pieces you can own.

What really sets a maxi skirt apart is the movement. Unlike your minis or midis, the maxi fully covers the legs, giving you comfort and a little drama (in the best way). Some styles are fitted through the waist and hips and then flare out, while others are breezy and billowy from the top to bottom.

Are Maxi Skirts in Style?

Absolutely! Maxi skirts are one of those forever pieces that never really go out of style. They come in so many shapes, fabrics, and silhouettes that there’s truly something for everyone and every season. Lately denim and linen maxis are having a moment. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably seen them all over your Pinterest feed. I’m especially into this one from Tuckernuck… so good.

What to Wear with a Maxi Skirt

Button Down Cardigan

This is one of my favorite combos for tromping around town on a mild spring day: a flowy skirt paired with a button-down cardigan. It’s such an easy way to feel pulled together without trying too hard. I especially love throwing a bright cardigan over a simple crisp white cotton skirt for that perfect little pop of color. (PS – this is an awesome, affordable white maxi skirt!)

You can go oversized and slouchy or keep it more fitted and polished… it really just depends on what makes you feel your best. (And honestly, the styling options for cardigans are endless!) Lately, I’ve been obsessed with what I’m calling my Orange Crush outfit. It’s a punchy orange cardigan, that same white maxi, and chunky woven sandals. It’s playful, comfy, and still feels chic. You can see me talk more about the “Orange Crush” look in this post!

Cropped Tank Top

For sweltering summer days, you can’t go wrong with a bubble-hem crop top and breezy maxi skirt. Or, if you’re not totally into the cropped look, switch that out for a smocked tank for a little more coverage! I love pairing a lightweight, flowy skirt (bonus points for a fun print or pretty eyelet detail) with, honestly, any kind of tank! Not only is it a great way to beat the heat, but it’s effortlessly chic and balanced.

Add a pair of strappy sandals or your favorite white sneakers if you’re running around the city, and finish it off with a woven bag. It’s easy, refined, and perfect for whatever the day brings.

White T-shirt

To me, daytime dressing is all about good quality basics. That said, you truly can’t go wrong with a crisp white tee and a maxi skirt. It’s one of those timeless combos that always looks put-together no matter the season. Dress it up with some chunky jewelry and a polished bag, or keep it casual with sneakers (or these flip flops; a dead ringer for The Row) and oversized sunglasses. Either way, it just works.

One of the best things about starting with a white tee is how many maxi skirt possibilities it instantly unlocks. A silky satin slip skirt? Always a yes. A crinkled chiffon number? Equally fab. And if the temps dip, just layer on your favorite cardigan!

And on that note of tees, I am so thrilled that Leset made my favorite white t-shirt in a lighter fabric for summer.

Chunky Knit Sweater

Thinking about wearing your maxi skirt into fall? You absolutely can and should. Pair it with a chunky knit sweater for that effortless cozy vibe we all love this time of year. Add your favorite boots (like these stylish suede heels), and maybe even top it off with a felt hat to complete the look.

Not into the slouchy sweater silhouette? Cinch things in with a belt to define the waist and add a little structure. This is why fashion is fun! It’s so easy to add or take away small things that make you look and feel your best.

Graphic T-shirt

Craving something a little more casual? Try pairing a denim maxi skirt (or any simple solid one) with a fun graphic tee. I love this graphic sardine tee from Clare V., but you can also wear your favorite band or a vintage-inspired logo. Toss your hair up into a messy bun, add your go-to sunglasses, and you’ve got that effortlessly cool vibe down.

Want in on a little styling trick if you don’t have a maxi skirt? Grab a black maxi dress, throw a graphic tee over it, tie it in a knot at the waist… and voila! It totally gives the look of a skirt and no one will know the difference.

Finish things off with classic Converse or a chunky loafer, and you’re ready for whatever the day brings. This look works for errands, brunch, or a cozy solo moment at your favorite café, book in hand

Linen Waistcoat

One of the things I love most about maxi skirts is that they’re effortlessly alluring. They show off your shape without showing too much skin. But if you do want to show a little, a waistcoat-style top is such a chic way to do it. With the tie-front detail, it gives just the right amount of skin… playful, but still polished.

I’m especially into this linen waistcoat from Marks & Spencer. It pairs beautifully with a breezy cotton or linen maxi skirt for spring and summer. Effortless, but with a little edge.

Or, you could keep things a bit more buttoned up (literally), with the linen waistcoat from Posse that I’m wearing in the photo above. I paired it with this flowy white maxi skirt from J.Crew and these amazing (very comfortable) Madewell wedge espadrilles.

How to Style a Maxi Skirt

Printed Maxi Skirt with a Denim Jacket

Printed maxi skirts are such a fun way to show a little personality—florals, stripes, whatever makes your smile. I love pairing one with a cropped, boxy denim jacket to give the look a bit of structure. The relaxed fit and slightly oversized sleeves add that cool utilitarian edge that balances out the skirt’s feminine feel perfectly.

To finish it off, I’d go with chunky brown loafers and a pair of bold socks (unexpected, but so fun). And of course, you can’t forget to add accessories! A vintage-inspired bag, gold watch, and your favorite sunglasses are all you need.

White Cotton Maxi Skirt with a Bright Cardigan

If you’re looking for a fresh, elegant, and totally wearable way to style a maxi skirt this spring or summer, this look has it all. It’s crisp, colorful, and effortlessly chic. Start with a classic white maxi and pair it with a bright, fitted cardigan for that perfect pop of color. You can even have a little fun with the look and find a maxi that maintains structure and volume!

Add a pair of neutral woven wedges for a little height (without sacrificing comfort), and finish it off with a suede handbag and amber-tinted sunglasses. This is the kind of outfit that feels casual but yet put-together at the same time!

Print Maxi Skirt with a Long Trench Coat

Start this skirt outfit with a printed maxi skirt—soft pleats and a little structure is always a win. Next, pair it with a simple solid top, whether that’s a classic tee or fitted long-sleeve. If the temps allow it, layer on a floor-length trench! When you cinch it at the waist, it effortlessly transforms the look, providing a little shape and structure.

Finish it off with minimal black heeled sandals (a peep toe is always a nice touch) and a structured handbag. Polished, elegant, and easy.

Pleated Maxi Skirt with Boatneck Top

Channel a little Parisian magic with this timeless, French-inspired look that’s as effortless as it is polished. Start with a cream pleated maxi skirt it’s soft, feminine, and moves beautifully. And of course, you must pair it with a classic black-and-white striped boatneck top! It’s a true French-girl staple that never goes out of style. FYI, Lands End also has a great classic boatneck. I just got this one and love it.

For shoes, I’d go with pointed-toe slingback flats. They’re sleek and put-together without trying too hard, and they keep the whole silhouette feeling clean and elongating. Finish the look with a structured black crossbody bag, a pair of minimal gold hoops, and a swipe of red lipstick to tie it all together.

Denim Maxi Skirt with White Button-Up Shirt

There’s just something about a denim maxi skirt that always feels effortlessly cool. It’s relaxed but still feels fun and eye-catching. It is a little bit retro, but denim never goes out of style. I love pairing it with a half-tucked crisp white button-down, to keep things feeling polished. The contrast between the structured top and the laid-back denim gives you that perfect, balanced silhouette.

Add a woven belt to cinch the waist and bring in a little texture, then go with tan leather mules or classic white sneakers—totally depends on your plans for the day. Finish it off with tortoiseshell sunglasses and a simple gold pendant for that quiet-luxury touch.

Style your maxi skirt to match your mood and the day!

Maxi skirts are really one of those magical wardrobe pieces that you can do anything with. You can dress them up or down, wear them in any season, and somehow, they always feel just right. Whether you’re styling yours with a crisp button-down, a slouchy sweater, or a breezy tank for summer, there are just so many ways to make them your own.

I’d love to hear how you’re planning to wear a maxi skirt this season! Do you have a favorite way to style one, or are you maybe feeling inspired to try something new? Let me know in the comments!
