Perhaps the best we can do to celebrate Women’s History Month is to look back on the moments when they broke barriers. There is a lot to remember in the sports camp. We’ve wondered about so many of Serena Williams’ tennis championship outfits like Off-White and counted her incredibly cool sneaker collection, but there are so many more athletes who have set records in outfits they may not have known about have to become icons.
Take, for example, Billie Jean King, who hit Bobby Riggs in a dress made by Ted Tinling that she was not supposed to be wearing! (Yes, it was a backup where rhinestones were quickly sewn on the morning of the game.) Then there’s the football player Brandi Chastain’s black Nike sports bra, which she revealed when she took off her shirt, around her jersey swinging to triumphant victory – It is now framed and hangs in your home. And Flo-Jo’s one-legged overalls were iconic enough to be recreated by Beyoncé for Halloween.
